Hopscotch and Sealed Crack Lines

Street Markings

Hopscotch and Sealed Crack Lines was inspired by a multicolored chalk hopscotch drawn in an alley that I walked by three times before deciding to take a picture.

When I started painting the lines around the chalk and collaged fabric hopscotch lines on this painting, I realized the Micaceous Iron Oxide paint I was using looks very similar to the material used for the sealed crack lines on the streets in my neighborhood and in the alley where I took the picture. Chalk and seal cracking are very different forms of mark making. Both are inspiring.

The rain washed away the chalk hopscotch but the sealed lines in the alley remain.

Future Utility Work, Future AT&T Work #1, and Future AT&T Work #2 were inspired by spray paintings on the sidewalk that caught my eye when I walked at lunch time. It wasn’t the ATT painted text, it was the bright red and orange that caught my eye. I walked by it the first time and realized I should have taken a picture. The next day I made a point to walk by it so I could.

The bright graffiti-like spray painted colors on asphalt catch my eye when I walk by them when I’m on a lunch time walk in the town where I work. The markings in this town are much more colorful than I see in the town I live in.

Bullseye with Hole in the Sidewalk was inspired when on a lunch time walk at work.

The bullseye caught my eye one day when I walked by it. I stopped and took a picture, not realizing there was a cigarette butt in the hole, making it a still life of sorts.

All of the paintings on this page include acrylic skins of the photographs, collaged monoprinted, painted and stitched construction fence fabric, and painting, on 6” x 6" board, created in 2021.
