Dates in a Life Walking Project 2019

The Dates in a Life Walking Project 2019 is a year-long painting project documenting the number of steps I walked each day.

I prefer to walk for exercise, as time permits, outside in addition to whatever other walking I do as I go about my day. My goal is to walk as much as I can every day.

I started out using the Health app in my iPhone to keep track of steps, but switched midyear the Pedometer app. Apple reworked Health and it wasn't easily showing the weekly number of steps, miles, and stairs climbed.

I used a system of symbols to represent each thousand steps. Instead of showing exactly how many I walked. The black icons represent up to 9999 steps walked each day, red represents 10,000-19,999 steps and yellow represents 20,000-29,999 steps.

The daily background color changed season-to-season in this painting. Teal Blue represents Winter, Green for Spring, Summer is Bright Yellow for the summer, Autumn is Indian Hue, and Winter starts in December as Teal Blue.

The reason for the having the daily background color was to document my daily steps in fractions of 250 steps. As an example, after 2000 steps (which would be the icon with no paint), I painted colors to show as close as I could to 2250, 2500, 2750, and then up to 2999, instead of then rounding up to 3000 steps.

The painting is created with monoprinted textures of a construction fence as the background, handstamped rubber erasers on fabric which are collaged on the background grid, as well as handpainting and stitching on stiffened fabric.
